Men in black

Charles Bukowski, Pull A String, A Puppet Moves

un reloj parado –
No el de la chimenea –
la mejor habilidad de Ginebra
No puede poner a la marioneta a hacer reverencias
que ahora todavía colgaba
Emily Dickinson, A Clock Stopped

lo que los hombres persiguen
de placer, locura, guerra o amor,
This race imitation takes everything in sight,
Like dress, hablan, move
Jonathan Swift, The Puppet Show

I wish I could look inside your head
And read your thoughts
They are opposites, They are opposites
Here we go again
The old game ever …

I like your puppet on a string
Because in this game
You always win
Jasmin Tabatabai, Puppet from the movie Bandits

And when I'm a puppet
And when I have no voice
I'm in your hands
I'm your puppet
Lisa Germano, Puppet

All you have to do
It is to move your little hand
I'm your puppet

In cuervo I spoke to Detective Conan. This is a manga and anime series about a detective child. It is very popular among children and people in their twenties. As I mentioned in my last column Martial Arts in manga and anime, because it does not directly about learning budo. But, in fact, Several of the characters are expert martial artists. This enters the story occasionally, when someone has to use a technique of martial arts to defend against a murderer. The famous private detective Kogoro Mori is an expert judoka. His daughter Ran is a karate champion. Heizo Hattori es un kendoka excelente. And his girlfriend has Kazuha Toyama 2 dan en aikido.

Detective Conan In a possible scenario of what happened at the crime scene shown times, while Conan solves what happened. The murderer is always shown as the same black vague silhouette.

It reminded me handlers bunraku puppets. Bunraku is the traditional Japanese puppet theater. It has close ties with kabuki. In fact, kabuki has used many of the stories originally written for bunraku.

Puppet manipulators are dressed in black and generally carry a black cap and face cover. There are three for each puppet. The main operator omo-zukai moves the body and right hand. The hidari-zukai moves his left hand. The ashi-zukai move your legs. You start as ashi-zukai and, possibly after years you can become omo-zukai. It is very similar to some martial arts.

If the puppeteers are so good that even the notes while watching the movement of puppets. And a small movement of the puppet is able to capture the essence of a character or suggest a deep emotion. But people are not content to see this level of mastery. They wanted to give recognition to the skill of the puppeteers teachers and so in some traditions do not wear hoods.

This has always been artificial and unnecessary for me. If anybody can do something perfectly why you would deliberately decrease perfection, leaving bareheaded. Destroy the suspension of disbelief and do that performance drops to a mere expert skill. Do not want to see how well the puppet master can make a
gesture of puppets. A Japanese actor once said to the moon. I want to see the moon.

Today aikido and other martial arts a lot of heads are not covered. A lot of faces shown. Many techniques proudly display. If the heads and faces were covered capace maybe we would see the clear heart of Budo rather than artificial, soulless technique.
